Valletta, last year's champions of the Maltese Premier League, are making another run at the title this season. The 19-time champions sit two points behind Hibernians at the top of the league.
Valletta lost 3-0 aggregate in its Champions League first qualifiying round tie against Artmedia Petrzalka of Slovakia. Valletta last advanced in the Champions League in the 1999-2000 season when it beat Barry Town of Wales 3-2 aggregate.
Valletta is in the quarterfinals of Maltese Cup, which will be played Feb. 6 and Feb. 7. The club has won the tournament 11 times.
Gilbert Agius, Malta's second-most capped player and the captain, is one of seven recent call-ups from Valletta to the Malta national team. Njongo Priso, a 20-year-old striker from Cameroon, has eight goals and is among the league leaders.
